“I like that,” she admitted softly. “Being just human.”

Struck by the unbridled emotion in her voice, Benedict turned to face her. “Tell me about your family?” he requested, and Caroline sighed, avoiding his eyes.

“I…” she started then shook her head. “I am not quite sure what to tell you.”

Benedict, for his part, did not answer or pressure her further. He merely looked at her gently, and she sighed deeply before she started to speak.

“I suppose you have noticed,” she said with a sigh, “that I do not resemble my family much.” Benedict nodded at this, and she paused, gathering the courage to continue. “Well, because of this… My father... he never truly believed I was his child.”
